Two men charged with murder of unarmed Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia

first_imgCourtesy of the Arbery FamilyBy MORGAN WINSOR, ABC News(ATLANTA) — Two men have been arrested and charged with murder and aggravated assault for the February shooting of 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.Gregory McMichael, 64, and his son, Travis McMichael, 34, were arrested on Thursday and will be booked into the Glynn County Jail.Cellphone video showing the moment has prompted national outrage since surfacing online this week, but his mother said she can’t bring herself to watch it.“I don’t think I’ll ever be in a mental state where I can actually watch the video. I had others that watched it that shared what they saw and that just was enough,” Wanda Cooper-Jones told ABC News in an interview that aired Thursday on “Good Morning America.”In the 28-second video, Arbery, who is black, can be seen jogging around a neighborhood just outside the port city of Brunswick on a sunny afternoon in late February. The footage ends with two loud gunshots.Gregory McMichael and Travis McMichael, who are both white, told police they grabbed their guns and hopped in their truck to pursue Arbery after seeing him running in their neighborhood, because they believed he was responsible for several recent burglaries. The father claimed his son got out of the truck holding a shotgun and was attacked by Arbery, according to a police report obtained by ABC News. The two men tussled over the firearm before Arbery was shot, as seen in the cellphone video, which was allegedly taken by a bystander.Arbery, who lived in Brunswick, one town over from where the McMichaels reside, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Glynn County coroner. No weapons were found on him, according to the police report.Nearly three months after the killing, no arrests have been made and no charges have been filed in the case.“I’m managing, it’s really hard,” Arbery’s mother told ABC News Thursday. “It’s really been hard.”Cooper-Jones said she believes authorities haven’t made any arrests because Gregory McMichael had a lengthy career as an investigator in the Brunswick district attorney’s office before recently retiring.“I think that they don’t feel like he was wrong because he was one of them,” she said. After the video circulated on social media Tuesday, a large crowd of protesters marched through the neighborhood where Arbery was killed. The Georgia Bureau of Investigations announced Wednesday that it was opening its own probe into the Feb. 23 incident.S. Lee Merritt, one of the attorneys representing Arbery’s family, said they are demanding answers and calling for the immediate arrests of Gregory and Travis McMichael.“Prosecutors will need a grand jury in order to formally indict these men, but that has nothing to do with actually going out and arresting the men seen on camera murdering a 25-year-old unarmed black man,” Merritt told ABC News in an interview that aired Thursday on “GMA.”“The prosecutors actually have the option, if they so chose to, to directly indictment and skip the entire grand jury process,” he added. “It’s something that happens all the time in our legal system, and this would certainly be an appropriate moment.”The McMichaels’ attorney did not immediately respond to ABC News’ request for comment Wednesday, and the McMichaels themselves did not return phone calls.Arbery would have turned 26 years old on Friday. Cooper-Jones described her late son as humble, kind, well-mannered and beloved by his family and peers.“Ahmaud didn’t deserve to go the way that he went,” she said.Copyright © 2020, ABC Audio. SRA ‘wrong to pursue costs via conduct rules’

first_imgThe Solicitors Regulation Authority was wrong to use professional conduct rules to pursue a former practitioner for costs, a tribunal has found. David Bellchamber had been ordered to pay fixed costs adding up to £850 in connection with a 2011 tribunal rebuke and subsequent unsuccessful appeal. He refused to pay, arguing the costs were excessive. In March the SRA took the matter to the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal, claiming Bellchamber had failed to comply with the costs issue in an ‘open, timely and co-operative manner’. However the SDT found that Bellchamber had been ‘entirely open’ in his refusal to pay. The tribunal found the SRA was no different to any other litigant acting as a claimant and should have issued civil proceedings to recover the sum. An SRA spokesperson said: ‘The cost of delivering sanctions should be borne by those individuals who are disciplined. We are considering the next appropriate steps to recover the profession’s money in light of the SDT’s decision.’last_img read more

Two classic looks. It wasn’t a championship but it was a semi-final. The National Championship looked good, but it wasn’t the best look for either team. Buster Hey guys-After looking at the TB vs CHI Stanley Cup Finals series, I thought that this could be one of the best dressed series in playoff/championship sports history. I mean, look at them:Is there any others you thought looked really good? Post your ideas here. I would love to see this become an awesome thread. I’ll say it again, Tampa Bay doesn’t have bad uniforms. You guys criticize them for looking like a Leafs/Wings mix, two of the best jerseys in the NHL. In a vacuum, Tampa looks great. It’s just that they look to much like another team. Let’s dock them points for creativity, not pure looks. They would do well to take their shoulder patch and use it as a starting point. Still, for a franchise with a short history plagued with sartorial conundrum, this is a huge improvement. I think we can all agree that what Tampa Bay is wearing is not ideally what they should be wearing – black and blue is what they should be skating out in – but if we’re putting that aside and just talking uniforms as they are? Heck, I’ll say it: Tampa Bay looks great. I love it. It’s clean and crisp, and the blue looks great against Chicago. Throw the tomatoes if you want to, but I think when just talking uniform match ups as they presently are, you have to look at what you’re presently given and strip away all the other “they should be wearing this or that” stuff. And what I’m seeing is a great matchup. And now for something completely different, I’ll throw another matchup out there: 1961 World Series, Pirates vs. Yankees. Possibly two of the top five greatest uniform sets in baseball history pitted against each other. I feel Pittsburgh’s classic vests, just as they were in ’61 from head to toe, were absolutely flawless. I’m not exaggerating either, I can’t think of a single flaw. Just a perfect set (and what they should still be wearing today). Pit that against the timeless Yankee pinstripes (and a beautiful, classy road set), and you get an absolutely perfect championship matchup. It doesn’t hurt either that a moment like Mazeroski’s homer is linked to that matchup forever, too.As for more recent and modern WS match ups, I always felt Indians/Marlins in ’97, Phillies/Yankees in ’09, and Royals/Giants last year were great as well. I thought each of these were great match-ups, and each offered something different style and color wise. A great Bulls uniform vs. the iconic Lakers’ unis in 1991. A unique style in 1992 that shared the Bulls’ colors while looking very different. And in 1993, the now-entrenched classic vs. something outlandish which still worked great. The second three-peat wasn’t nearly as good, uni-wise.
