Martin Truex Jr., crew chief Cole Pearn to join Joe Gibbs Racing in 2019

first_imgMonster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion Martin Truex Jr. will drive for Joe Gibbs Racing in 2019, giving the longtime team owner a powerful four-car operation with multiple Monster Energy Series champions.Truex is leaving Furniture Row Racing after five seasons with the Denver, Colorado-based No. 78 organization. He’ll replace Daniel Suarez on the No. 19 team, bringing crew chief Cole Pearn along with him. Furniture Row announced in August it would shutter its operations at the end of the season, paving the way for Truex Jr. to become a marquee free agent.RELATED: Key players in ‘Silly Season’“Anytime you have an opportunity to bring two people of this caliber into your organization, it’s certainly an exciting time,” said Joe Gibbs, owner of Joe Gibbs Racing, in a team release. “They obviously have developed a chemistry that has led to tremendous success, including a championship. We’ve gotten to know them well over the past few years through the alliance and having been part of the Toyota family. They both make us stronger as an organization.”JGR indicated that sponsorship plans for next season were still in progress and would be announced at a later date.Truex, 38, has four wins and four Busch Pole Awards this year for Furniture Row, which operates in partnership with JGR. His performance has placed him among the championship contenders heading into the Round of 8 finale this weekend at ISM Raceway in Phoenix.Truex will be Kyle Busch’s teammate in 2019, giving JGR a powerful 1-2 punch with two of the most recent Monster Energy Series champions. Erik Jones and Denny Hamlin complete the four-driver roster at JGR.All but two of Truex’s 19 Monster Energy Series wins have come with Furniture Row and team owner Barney Visser. The Furniture Row Racing owner issued a statement appreciative of Truex and Pearn’s efforts.“I want to personally thank Martin and Cole for their contributions in making Furniture Row Racing a championship-caliber team,” Visser said. “There’s no doubt in my mind that they will continue to be a winning driver/crew chief combination with Joe Gibbs Racing. They are outstanding representatives for NASCAR and I am proud to have been associated with them. But before Martin and Cole depart for a new endeavor we still have two races remaining, and hopefully we will be celebrating another championship at Homestead-Miami Speedway.”Pearn has been with Truex for all 17 of his Furniture Row victories, and the driver-crew chief pairing will remain intact next season.“Obviously to be able to make this transition and still be able to work alongside Cole is something that was very important to me,” Truex said in a release provided by the team. “There is also a real comfort level working with the JGR team and I wanted to stay in the Toyota family. We still have big goals for the remainder of this season, but it’s nice to know what we will be doing in 2019.”RELATED: All of Truex’s wins | Truex through the yearsTruex marched to his first title in NASCAR’s top division in 2017 by winning eight races, including the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. He is also a two-time champion in what is now called the Xfinity Series, going back-to-back in 2004-05.Suarez’s tenure with Joe Gibbs Racing will end after two seasons in NASCAR’s top division. The Mexican-born driver made the transition to the Monster Energy Series after Carl Edwards’ departure in January 2017, moving up after claiming the Xfinity Series championship for JGR the previous season.Suarez climbed the NASCAR ladder through the Toyota Racing system and is now one of the sport’s top free agents for 2019. Gibbs, who oversaw much of his stock-car racing development, wished him well in a statement from the team.“We really appreciate everything Daniel has done for Joe Gibbs Racing over these past several years,” Gibbs said. “He has made the most of every opportunity from winning the championship in the Xfinity Series to making the jump into the Cup Series for us. We look forward to hearing about his plans going forward and know he continues to have a bright future in our sport.”last_img read more

Credit unions: Why not you?

first_imgBY ANNE LEGGMuch has already been said about Seattle’s recent Super Bowl victory and the commitment of players and fans alike. Among several standout moments, quarterback Russell Wilson’s quote from his father – “Why not you?” – might well have been his best play of the day. It’s a wonderful question that encourages someone to achieve the seemingly unachievable. And the way it’s framed invites the listener to look beyond any perceived limitations and believe in success. After all, somebody has to be the best _____ (fill in the blank). And everybody can think of a list of reasons why they can’t achieve something. But what about the list of reasons why you could?Look at Russell Wilson. He’s had some great opportunities throughout his life, but he’s had to work hard too. He’s not the biggest player on the field. His great-great-grandfather was a slave. He sprained a knee during his second football season in college. His father died while Russell was in college. He was nominated for the Heisman Trophy but didn’t win it. He wasn’t a first-round draft pick, largely because of his height. That’s a decent handful of “why nots” but it certainly doesn’t define who Wilson is. He has tremendous athletic abilities, but more importantly he’s a young man with drive, an unwavering belief in himself and a desire to help others. He volunteers at The Seattle Children’s Hospital and visits servicemembers at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. He raises money for a diabetes foundation named for his father. He’s a team player both on and off the field. He pours himself into his commitments. continue reading » 1SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblrlast_img read more

Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Rwanda Genocide

first_imgAs the world officially remembers the genocidal murder of 800,000 Rwandans in 1994, United Nations leaders warn that ethnic cleansing and mass atrocities continue to blight humanity and call for sharper action to prevent such violations in the future.Twenty-four years ago, on 7 April, ethnic Hutus in Rwanda began the frenzied slaughter of Tutsis, moderate Hutus and others in what is widely regarded as one of the darkest episodes in recent history. In memory of the Rwandan victims – and as a sombre reminder of the international community’s failure to intervene – the UN observes 7 April every year as an “international day of reflection.”“Today we remember all those who were murdered and reflect on the suffering of the survivors, who have shown that reconciliation is possible, even after a tragedy of such monumental proportions,” said Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a message for the grim anniversary.“Rwanda has learned from its tragedy; so must the international community,” Mr. Guterres said, expressing concern about “the rise of racism, hate speech and xenophobia around the world.”The UN will hold a commemorative ceremony on the Rwandan genocide at its New York Headquarters on 13 April on the theme “Remember, Unite, Renew.”last_img read more

Campanaro becomes latest Ravens wide receiver to depart

first_imgMichael Campanaro became the latest Ravens wide receiver to depart this offseason by agreeing to a one-year deal with the Tennessee Titans on Tuesday. The River Hill product turned in the best season of his career in 2017, leading the AFC in punt return average (10.8 yards per attempt) and catching a career-high 19 passes for 173 yards and one touchdown. Campanaro returned a punt 77 yards for a touchdown in the Week 6 overtime loss to Chicago.A 2014 seventh-round pick out of Wake Forest, Campanaro endured a slew of injuries that limited him to just 11 games over his first three seasons before playing in 13 contests in 2017. The 5-foot-9, 191-pound receiver joins Mike Wallace and Jeremy Maclin as Baltimore wide receivers to exit this offseason. The Ravens signed free-agent wide receivers Michael Crabtree and John Brown last month to try to breathe new life into the NFL’s 29th-ranked passing attack. Campanaro posted the following farewell message to his Twitter account: In 24 career games for the Ravens, Campanaro caught 31 passes for 310 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 10 times for 131 yards and a touchdown.last_img read more

College welding program certified

first_img AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREFrumpy Middle-aged Mom: My realistic 2020 New Year’s resolutions. Some involve doughnuts.More than 60 percent of welding jobs are in manufacturing, with jobs focusing on fabricated metal products, transportation equipment, machinery for agriculture and construction and mining. At the same time, qualified welders are in short supply across the country, and employers are having difficulties hiring people with these job skills, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. In addition, the field will see more positions open in the next 10 years as a large number of today’s welders retire. Baber said the testing allows students to become certified in different types of welding and opens more doors to employment. “Our students can now go anywhere in the world to get work and advance their careers,” he said. VALENCIA – The American Welding Society has recognized College of the Canyons with national accreditation. The designation allows the community college to serve as an accredited testing facility. “This is as good as it gets,” said Tim Baber, chairman of the college’s Welding Technology Program. “It really expands upon the certification choices students have.” Baber said students who pass the organization’s welding certification exams are more likely to find work and, in the end, can earn higher wages. Starting this month, the school is offering new courses in pipe welding. The classes join a host of other existing courses in welding technology, metal sculpturing and weld inspecting. To qualify for the certified program, the college’s Welding Technology Department passed an extensive audit and accreditation process, Baber said. Fall classes at College of the Canyons will begin Aug. 28. [email protected] (661) 257-5254160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
