Eighteen year old fined for possession of cannabis

Brenton Tony Christian, a fisherman, was arrested on 6th July and pleaded guilty to the charge when appeared before magistrate Candia Carette George on Thursday, 11th July. Information revealed in court indicates that while police officers, attired in plain clothes were patrolling area, they observed a group of young men sitting on stools by the road. The officers also noticed a clear zip lock plastic bag in Christian’s hand. The police prosecutor told the court that when the defendant was approached, he threw the bag of what looked like cannabis under an old parked car.“Officer I just come there wi, that is some marijuana I have there for me to smoke, already I owing the court give me a chance nuh,” he told the police. According to police reports, when Christian was cautioned he failed to respond and was taken into custody. Before handing down her sentence Magistrate George cautioned the defendant. “You have graduated from juvenile court, since you little boy you getting yourself into problem. I will fine you today,” she said. Magistrate George urged the young offender to take his earnings from fishing to do something positive.“You hanging out with the wrong crowd, go to church, take your little fishing money and do something productive, don’t throw your life down the drain. You cannot be sitting on the block smoking marijuana with all your fishing money,” she advised.Christian, who has a previous charge, was spared a prison sentence and ordered to pay $500.00 dollars by 31st August, 2013 or in default of payment, spend one month in prison. Meanwhile, Marcellus Shillingford of 56 Steber Street was charged $280.00 for stealing one bottle of WD-40 worth $14.00 from Wykies Auto Company-NAPA in Canefield. The incident occurred on 4th July, 2013. “Your honor, I am sorry I will never do it again. I don’t know what went up in my head. If I have to pay five times the amount I will pay it,” Shillingford said.Magistrate George told the defendant that his situation was an embarrassing one and that he would have to pay twenty times the cost of the item. “If you want to buy something and you cannot afford it then wait until you have the money to buy it,” she warned him.
