HOOVER, Ala. – Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin took exception to the idea that his team is in a tight spot heading into Friday’s SEC Tournament elimination game.The Commodores lost 6-1 to Texas A&M Thursday with their ace, SEC Pitcher of the Year Carson Fulmer, on the mound. And now No. 2 seed Vanderbilt (40-18) must beat No. 11 seed Alabama (32-27) in the Crimson Tide’s home ballpark at 3 p.m. Friday to stay in the SEC bracket.“Our backs aren’t against the wall because today will have nothing to do with tomorrow,” Corbin said. “Just a good baseball game, and we will be excited to play again. … It’s just one game. That’s all it is, just one game. A tournament will always be that way. It was (Thursday) and it will be (Friday).”Vanderbilt has not named a starting pitcher, but junior left-hander Philip Pfeifer (3-4) is the likely choice as the next man up in the regular weekend rotation.Alabama coach Mitch Gaspard said he would likely pitch junior right-hander Will Carter (4-5), who has relevance to the Commodores.Carson Fulmer rocked, Vanderbilt falls to Texas A&MCarter, a former Science Hill standout, earned his only SEC win this season against Vanderbilt on Saturday. He tossed three shutout innings of relief to beat Vanderbilt in that regular-season finale.Vanderbilt shortstop Dansby Swanson, who has three home runs in two SEC Tournament games, said Carter should be comfortable facing the Commodores lineup again.“We have seen him once,” Swanson said. “Having gone through our lineup a couple of times already, we know he will be ready for the game (Friday).”Vanderbilt must solve its hitting slump.
