Two UWF Argos have Earned AVCA All-American Honors

first_imgDecember 10, 2019Division II AVCA All-American TeamsWest Florida All-American Awards LEXINGTON, Ky. – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) has announced the 38th annual AVCA All-America teams for NCAA Division II Women’s Volleyball. This year the Argos have two players selected for All-American Honors.Jordyn Poppen, West Florida, OH, Sr.Stats: 3.39 K/S, .246 Hitting %, 3.38 D/SShe is the seventh AVCA All-American for West Florida and the fourth AVCA All-American Third Team. For UWF all of their AVCA All-Americans have come since 2007, none before. This season Poppen has left it all on the court for her team and her senior year. When being asked about her success throughout the season and winning awards, she has always responded with, “The awards are nice, but they are not the goal or the focus. I care more about the winning and my team then I do about the records.” Poppen is an all around leader and people have noticed. This season, Poppen has earned 2019 AVCA All-Region team selection, D2CCA All-South Region First Team selection, for the first time in UWF history, D2CCA All-South Region Player of the Year, First Team All-GSC and GSC Player of the Year. She has been GSC Offensive Player of the Week, earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team at Pacer Invitational, Springhill Suites Invitational and was on the All-Tournament Team for the 2019 GSC Tournament along with being the tournament’s MVP. Poppen has earned 22 double-doubles this season. Veresia Yon, West Florida, MB, RS-Fr.Stats: 2.83 K/S, .337 Hitting %, 1.11 B/S, 142 TBShe is the tenth AVCA All- American Honorable Mention for West Florida in program history. This is the fifth year in a row where the Argos have had a player earn this honor since 2015.To receive this honor is outstanding on it’s own, but to do this as a Freshman only tells you what kind of player and person Yon is. The potential she has to continue to succeed is right in front of her and like Poppen, she plays for the team. This season, Yon has earned 2019 AVCA All-Region team selection, D2CCA All-South Region First Team selection, All-GSC First Team, and has won GSC Freshman of the Week three times this season. Yon has broken the UWF school record for blocks in a single season with 142 blocks. There have been 11 matches in the season where Yon hit above  .400 already placing herself in the UWF Record books yet again as a Freshman. The 2019 All-America selections were made by the AVCA Division II All-America Committee: Flip Piontek – Central Missouri (chairperson), Laurie Lokash – Slippery Rock (Atlantic Region), Chris Herron – Washburn (Central Region), John Titus – Caldwell (East Region), Wick Colchagoff – Findlay (Midwest Region), Mika Robinson – Rollins (South Region), Chuck Waddington – Angelo State (South Central), Jackie Buchanan – Chowan (Southeast), Chris Green (West Region). How to Follow the Argos: For complete information on UWF Volleyball, follow the team on Twitter at @UWFVolleyball and on Instagram at @UWFVolleyball.Print Friendly Versionlast_img read more
