Arriva flotation axed as German taxpayer stumps up extra cash

first_imgA €1bn bail out – in the form of a capital increase – by the German government, means that the planned part-flotation of Arriva on the London Stock Exchange has been cancelled.DB’s corporate HQ in BerlinDeutsche Bahn (DB) – Germany’s national rail operator, which bought Arriva out of private ownership in 2010 – is 100% owned by the German government.Arriva is headquartered in Sunderland and runs UK bus, UK Rail plus bus and rail franchises in 13 other European countries. It employs 55,000 people and in 2015 made a €525m profit on a €4.9bn turnover.Due to DB’s worsening finances in Germany, in May DB’s board proposed part-privatisation of its DB Cargo rail freight business and Arriva, to raise around €4bn.But the privatisation become politically unpopular and the run up to the 2017 German elections has seen the U-turn.The capital increase is funded by above-forecast government tax revenues. The government is also allowing DB to retain more of its profits, now paying a reduced annual dividend of €350m for 2017-2020, instead of €850m in 2017 and at least €500m a year afterwards. The two measures effectively give DB an extra €2.4bn of extra funds.last_img read more
