Orville Higgins | An open prayer for 2019

first_imgIt is now fast approaching the end of 2018, and before you know it, a new year will be upon us. I have put together my own wish list to the sports gods for 2019. Whether God answers sports prayers has been a long debate in my circles. I personally doubt it, but just in case I’m wrong, I’m going to write an open letter to the man upstairs. Dear God, for 2019, please help the Windies to get to the semi-finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup. I am not asking for a miracle, so I won’t ask for them to win. Please help the Windies Test team to lose in five days instead of three, oh Lord. We would thank you for that small mercy. Please Lord, do not make the Golden State Warriors win the NBA again next year. The thing is becoming too predictable. Give another team the strength to beat them, even if it’s game seven. If you can help the LeBron James-led LA Lakers to get deep into the play-offs, I’d be eternally grateful. Father, we ask you to help that we will still create a storm in the sprints next year. We can’t have an IAAF World Championships without a Jamaican on the podium in the sprints. The country would suffer serious depression. While we are reasonably optimistic about the women, oh Lord, the truth is we are worried about the men. Bless the men to move as fleet footed as we once did. Help the Reggae Girlz to represent well at the FIFA Women’s World Cup next year. Just like the Reggae Boyz two decades ago, if we win one and lose the rest, we will be happy, oh Lord. We are not going to “fly up in your face” and be overly ambitious. Help the Sunshine Girls, dear Lord. We are sure that there are evil spirits that are following them. How else can we explain those near misses in 2018? Be among them for any major tournament they have next year. Teach them that before every game, they must address the devil directly and say “Get thee hence behind me, Satan.” We pray for the other sports too, oh Father. Help the Rugby Union and League teams throughout their various competitions next year. Let the world stop and notice us. Help Serena Williams to win a few more Grand Slams next year and erase any doubt about the best female ever in tennis. Help the organisers of the Wray & Nephew Contender Series to find better boxers in the early rounds, oh Lord. We like knockouts, but after round three. Finally, oh Father, help ISSA to understand that the 45 per cent rule has done its time. Amen. Asking for your helplast_img
